California – A Case Study in Failure

So, let us get the obvious out of the way.  Yes, California is the wealthiest state in the union by almost every measure.  It has the 5th highest gross income per capita (1), the most accumulated wealth (2), and the largest overall economy – to the point that it is 5th in the world when measured as a nation (3).  But at risk of sounding like some sour-grapes cliché – it is not always about the ducats.  And let us be honest – without Hollywood and Silicon Valley, California would just be average economically (4).  Perhaps more importantly, there is a palpable movement of the rich and middle-class alike OUT of the Golden State (5).

Why is that?  Why are these so-called Liberals, who pander to the perpetually offended, and act in ways that would make Il Duce and Goebbels proud, all while telling us how the very Capitalism that made them rich is horrible, and we should all live under the protective thumb of a never-been-tried-before Democratic Socialist utopia, suddenly packing up and moving to classically liberal states that have lower taxes, more freedom, and gasp support he 2nd Amendment?

Could it be the fact that it is filthy?  The fact that there is an app that tracks the location of hobo shit should tell you something (6). Even the soft-spoken mouthpiece of the official leftist RightThink, the NPR, admits that bums and their shanty villages are at epidemic levels (7).  But, would not a Socialist utopia welcome the poor huddled masses of habitually lazy or certifiably insane itinerant human flotsam?

Perhaps it is the crime? The wrongheaded idea that decriminalizing sex crimes (8), petty theft (9), providing sanctuary to illegal aliens (10), making it difficult for law-abiding citizens to protect themselves (11), or creating a revolving door for felons (12), California leads the nation on poorly thought-out reform of their criminal code that almost universally makes life miserable.  Personal and Property crimes continue to rise (13), including train burglaries (14) competing with smash and grab raids on upscale stores (15) for the Zero Fucks Given award among the entitled and terminally woke population.  Add in the trend of jury box activism that turns murders loose in the name of social justice (16), not to mention that the 9th Circuit is the most overturned Federal Appellate Court in the nation due in large part to its willful ignorance of the US Constitution (17), and one might begin to lose faith in the system.

The weather?  By all accounts, including this author’s personal experience, California has a mild climate in most of the state, through most of the year.  However – sunny days viewed through LA Smog (18) (to be fair much better today than it was 30 years ago), not to mention the stench of hobo camps, bum shyte, and maintaining a natural “patina” that includes ripe pits (19), and partly wiped arses (20), can put a damper on the most glorious day.

But let us not focus on the hygiene of the good denizens of Hollyweird, let us look at the myriad failures of the much-hyped CA laws that are meant to protect the environment and prevent Climate Change. 10% lower carbon emissions in 10 years (21) – That is all, despite having some of the most draconian climate/pollution laws in the world. Start tallying inane virtue-signaling stupidity like banning plastic straws (22), based on questionable research done by a child (23), and the evidence that the vast majority of the pollutants in the Pacific are put there by the Communist and Socialist nations of East Asia (24).   By almost any measure, California climate laws have been a huge flop (25).  Mismanagement has contributed to both the spate of destructive wildfires (26), and seemingly perpetual water shortage (27).  Add to that the likelihood of being crushed in an earthquake or landslide, considering the fact that most of the state’s population resides astride a fault line in a high desert, one must wonder exactly how great that weather really is.

On the subject of laws, and bad decisions – The repeated failure of the state leadership to respond appropriately and fairly to COVID (28), continually rising taxes (29), and a complete lack of accountability and integrity amongst the lawmakers at the state (30) and federal (31) levels have reached an epidemic level of corruption (32) about which the people of California should be literally up-in-arms.

Yet, instead of voting early and often as is the norm in the Granola State, and affecting change to clean up their own house, those that have the means to escape the stupid, oppressive, and expensive situation that they have wrought move to Colorado, Montana, Arizona, Texas, and Florida (among many others), and immediately vote for the same garbage laws and politics that forced their proverbial hand in California. Please – PLEASE – sort yourselves out.  Prove to yourselves that failed policies can be reversed there before you bring them here.
